Logistics & Supply Chain
We worked with Tasmanian businesses to assess the impacts and challenges arising from significant and ongoing freight and logistics disruptions.
We identified a series of challenges confronting the small to medium businesses. They were suffering logistic and financial challenges in supporting the direct to consumer market.
They had at least a 30% greater cost of delivery than their mainland peers.
They had significant problems with safe delivery of perishable commodities.
Our Answer:
We identified a potential solution whereby the business could collectively aggregate their smaller consignments into pallets they could then be transhipped with improved support for cold chain/perishables leveraging more competitive delivery rates.
To enable this we proposed the implementation of a 5PL (Fifth Party Logisitics) solution whereby a Logistics Aggregator consolidates the consignments of multiple customers.
Our Work:
The first element of our work was having recognised the challenge and potential answer we had to test the viability. To that end we developed a formal business case with supporting detail and market research which captured the viability of the solution.
With stakeholder approval we then developed the detail project management plan and solution architecture, encompassing the business, resource and technical requirements.
The final two elements were to prepare a business plan for the aggregator with identified stakeholders and prepare the grant submission documentation for presentation to government.
The aggregated 5PL solution would protect jobs and enable growth from improved competitive positions, lower freight costs, extended delivery times, guaranteed cold chain security and better delivery efficiencies that reduces current failed delivery levels.
The project would be the first of its kind in Tasmania offering a secure, fast, traceable and convenient option for producers which should be cheaper and more effective compared to the current services offered.
This 5PL solution would improve competitive and viability positions for Tasmanian SMEs and, allowing them to confidently forward plan and potentially expand their business.
