Mikani Pty Ltd was engaged by Hydrogen Fuels Australia to lead the planning of the Deakin Hydrogen Hub—a pioneering green hydrogen production and education facility at the Waurn Ponds campus. The objective was to transition a proof-of-concept hydrogen system into a scalable, commercially viable, and educationally integrated hydrogen production hub, aligned with state and federal renewable energy strategies.

Advisory Services & Methodology

Mikani Pty Ltd, under the leadership of Michael Holzer, delivered a comprehensive suite of advisory services:

Business Case
Business cases (including scoping studies): Mikani developed the foundational business case for the Hydrogen Hub, including a 10-year financial model, capital and operational cost estimates, and revenue projections from hydrogen and oxygen offtake.

Mikani facilitated stakeholder workshops to define the project’s scope—encompassing hydrogen production, educational integration, and commercial scalability. Objectives were clearly articulated around proof-of-concept validation, commercial production (1,000+ kg/month), and research and training enablement.

Cost modelling and analysis: A detailed cost model was developed, incorporating capital requirements ($10M), operational costs ($6.7M), and projected revenues ($19.6M). Sensitivity analysis was conducted to assess the impact of hydrogen pricing, offtake variability, and grid connection costs.

Outcomes:

The engagement delivered a robust, investment-ready project framework for the H2FA Hydrogen Hub. Key outcomes included:

  1. A staged implementation plan with defined deliverables and budget allocations.
  2. A comprehensive business case supporting funding applications and stakeholder buy-in.
  3. A scalable design for hydrogen production integrated with Deakin’s solar infrastructure.
  4. A training and education framework aligned with TAFE and university-level micro-credentials.
  5. A governance and reporting structure to support project delivery and future expansion.

Conclusion

This engagement demonstrates Mikani Pty Ltd’s capability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder projects from concept to implementation. Through strategic planning, rigorous analysis, and collaborative engagement, Mikani enabled H2FA and its partners to position the Hydrogen Hub as a national exemplar of green energy innovation, education, and sovereign capability development.
